Most pickups in musical instruments, such as the electric guitar, are high impedance voltage controlled circuits, in other words with a very low current flow. Because of this, the so-called microphonics (the noise created by moving or tapping a wire connected to a high impedance circuit) becomes a critical parameter.

Guitar cables must be resistant to this phenomenon, so in most cases a layer of conductive PVC is used under the shielding layer.
